IED bomb detonated at Saskatoon Provincial Courthouse

It was an eventful Wednesday night for emergency crews in Saskatoon after an explosive was detonated at the provincial courthouse.

Police said in a release early Thursday the explosion happened just after 11 p.m. at the entrance of Kilborn Place at the corner of 19th Street and 3rd Avenue South.

They said the blast was believed to have been caused by an improvised explosive device.

Photos taken by Ward 2 Councillor Hilary Gough moments after the incident showed flames in the entryway of the building.

“Very small fire in the front entrance,” her tweet read. “Pulled up to the foggy intersection just ahead of @SaskatoonFire.”

Saskatoon police’s bomb disposal unit and bomb-sniffing dogs were deployed to the scene along with the fire department.

A black scar was later visible on the pavement, with debris all around. The ceiling of the entry way was partially caved in, with investigators forced to crouch and duck around the scene.

One officer told 650 CKOM the ceiling was forced up by the concussive blast of the bomb before collapsing back down on its own weight.

The shatterproof glass doorway didn’t break, though the glass panels were damaged.

No-one was reported injured in the blast.

Police cleared the scene shortly after 1:30 a.m. with a single patrol car keeping watch over the area.

As of 2 a.m. no arrests had been made.
