St. Mary wrestlers grapple for gold at provincials

The St. Mary wrestlers came home from the provincial high school championships in Warman with four medals.

Team captain Kalin Langford defeated Sobirjon Youlyahshiev of Winston Knoll Collegiate in the boys 115kg gold medal match.

Cole Sanderson won his gold medal in the 62kg class with a win over Josh Millares of Tommy Douglas Collegiate.

Trevor Bannerman struck silver in the boys 73kg class, while Brianna Merasty grabbed a bronze with a third place finish in the girls 105kg class.

Coach Callam Olver said he’s proud of the entire team.

“We are proud of our student athletes who wrestled this year and are pleased to see the success of our medalists,” Olver said. He added the team’s accomplishments are a result of hard work and pride.

“They showed continued resilience and grit, fighting not only for themselves but for their team, school, families and community,” he said.  

The Mauraders sent 18 competitors to the provincials.

Meanwhile Samantha Paradis of Carlton claimed gold in the girls 73kg class, while Maggie Tiessen of Carlton struck silver in the girls 90kg competition.
