NORTH BATTLEFORD, Sask. — Casey Scheidegger was one loss away from being eliminated at the Canadian Open on Friday night. Less than 24 hours later she qualified for her first Grand Slam final.

Scheidegger, of Lethbridge, Alta., upset Edmonton’s Val Sweeting 7-3 on Saturday night in semifinal action to earn her place in the championship draw.

It was her third victory of the day and fourth in a row after starting with a 1-2 record.

She kept herself alive with a 7-4 win on Friday night against Winnipeg’s Kerri Einarson in the C-Bracket. Then she pulled off a 9-4 victory against Edmonton’s Kelsey Roque Saturday morning to make the playoffs and downed Winnipeg’s Jennifer Jones 6-5 in the quarter-finals to reach her match against the previously undefeated Sweeting in the triple-knockout tournament.

Scheidegger will face Switzerland’s Silvana Tirinzoni in the finals.

Tirinzoni defeated Sweden’s Anna Hasselborg 7-4 in the other semifinal.

Tirinzoni, along with Sweeting, qualified through the A-Bracket and has yet to lose at the tournament.

It’ll be Brad Gushue of St. John’s, N.L. against Sweden’s Niklas Edin in the men’s final.

Gushue, who won the event in 2015, will be aiming for his second Canadian Open title after downing Brad Jacobs of Sault Ste. Marie, Ont., 4-0 in semifinal play.

Edin downed John Morris of Vernon, B.C., 7-4 in the other semifinal.

Eight teams on both the men’s and women’s side had to qualify for the playoffs through a triple-knockout format where they had to win three games before they lost three in order to avoid elimination.

The finals are scheduled for Sunday.
