Busy weekend for P.A. police

Oct 17, 2016 | 1:31 PM

Prince Albert Police Service (PAPS) responded to a shooting and two armed robberies over what Sgt. Travis Willey called “a steady weekend.”

PAPS responded to 212 calls between Friday evening and Monday morning, and made 36 arrests. The most common complaint was for intoxicated persons, which accounted for 27 calls and 13 of the arrests. Nine people were remanded over the weekend and made their first court appearances this morning.

Below are some highlights from the cases we’re following this week.

Early-morning carjacking

Officers responded to a robbery complaint at roughly 3 a.m. Saturday morning. The victim told officers he had just arrived at his home in the 800 block of Seventh St. W. when two masked individuals threatened him with a firearm and forced him back into his vehicle. The suspects drove him West of the city and forced him out of his vehicle before driving off. Police say the victim was not injured.

Early this morning, PAPS officers observed the stolen vehicle in the 1200 block of 28th St. E. and performed an emergency stop. One male and two female suspects were arrested. All three were charged with possession of stolen property over $5,000.

Roberta Alook, Bonnie Michelle, Desmond Naytowhow made their first appearance this morning in P.A. provincial court, and are scheduled to appear again tomorrow.

No bail for car chase suspect

Michael Taylor remains in custody after a bail hearing this morning. Taylor, 40, is facing charges including evading police, resisting arrest and operating a vehicle in a manner dangerous to the public after allegedly leading PAPS on a high-speed chase Oct. 8.

Police say the chase reached speeds exceeding 100km/h before officers deployed a stop stick device to puncture the driver’s tires and end the pursuit. Taylor allegedly fled on foot before he was taken into custody by a police dog.

Taylor will appear before a P.A. provincial court to enter his plea Nov. 1.

Accused La Ronge child abductor remains in custody

Jarrod Charles, 18, remains in custody after his bail hearing was adjourned this morning.

Charles is accused of abducting two boys, ages eight and 10, in La Ronge last month.

RCMP activated an Amber Alert to assist in locating the children after it was revealed Charles was on an undertaking not to have any unsupervised contact with children under 16. Charles was taken into custody in St. Louis, Sask. by Wakaw RCMP, who located the missing children at the same residence.

Charles will appear again before a La Ronge provincial court next Monday.

Taxi Robbery

PAPS officers responded to a male cab driver who was robbed at gunpoint in the 600 block of Branion Dr. at approximately 1:30 a.m. Police said a lone male suspect brandished a BB gun and made off with an unknown amount of cash after threatening the driver. The victim was uninjured, and the BB gun used during the robbery was recovered from the scene.

Officers called in a K9 unit to track the suspect, and soon located a 22-year-old man who was charged with carrying a concealed weapon, robbery, using an imitation firearm, possession of a firearm while prohibited and uttering death threats.

The suspect was scheduled to make his first court appearance this morning.

Man hospitalized after shooting

A 37-year-old man was taken to hospital with a gunshot wound after PAPS responded to a call in the 2700 block of First Ave. E. Sunday morning.

PAPS were responding to a report that of a man who was beaten up and shot, and located the injured victim upon arrival. He was taken to hospital in stable condition.

Police say their investigation is ongoing, and have reached out to the public for assistance.
