Field of the Future raises $54K for Herb Bassett home

Oct 14, 2016 | 6:37 AM

The Herb Bassett Home’s future is secure thanks to a bumper crop of canola.

Redhead Equipment has grown an annual crop on their 140-acre field for the past four years, and donated the proceeds to community organizations.

This year’s canola crop raised more than $54,000, making 2016 the field’s most successful year ever.

Arron McLean, sales manager for Redhead Equipment, said he and the other staff members are enjoying their success. The 2016 crop produced roughly 50 bushels per acre, which McLean said exceeded their expectations by more than 20 per cent.

“We never expected these kind of results,” McLean said. “We managed to grow a phenomenal canola crop, way better than expected.”

“We were very fortunate to get it off before the weather turned,” McLean added. “Unfortunately a lot of our customers have a lot of work out there ahead of them still.”

The proceeds from the 2016 crop will be donated to the Herb Bassett Home, a 144-bed long-term care facility in Prince Albert.

McLean said the Field of the Future supports a different charity or organization in the P.A. area every year. Since its creation in 2013 the field has raised and donated more than $170,000.

The crop was in the bin by the end of September, but Redhead announced the year’s results as part of the grand opening of their new Prince Albert location, Oct. 13.
