Broncos beat Raiders in preseason finale

Sep 17, 2016 | 8:19 AM

A powerplay goal midway through the third period was enough to keep the Swift Current Broncos ahead of the Prince Albert Raiders.

Calvin Spencer landed the shot to break a 2-2 tie after a scoreless second period. The Broncos went on to win 4-2 Friday in Swift Current.

The teams combined for four goals in less than five minutes late in the first period, with Tristan Elder and Tyler Steenbergen getting powerplay goals for the Broncos.

Tim Vanstone and Loch Morrison replied to P.A.

Vanstone’s was a highlight reel goal with a power move to the net, but he was ejected moments later after getting into a fight.

An empty net goal late in the third iced the game for the Broncos.

Specialty teams were key as the Broncos went 3-5 on the power play and the Raiders were 0-4 with the man advantage.

The Broncos outshot the Raiders 20-15 with Ian Scott going the distance in net for the Raiders. Travis Child played the entire game for Swift Current.

The Raiders end the preseason with a 3-2 record.

They open the regular season next Friday, Sept. 23 in Regina, before hosting the Pats Saturday, Sept. 24 in the home opener.
