P.A. senior concerned about bus safety

Prince Albert’s transit system is coming under fire

Joyce Paradis addressed Executive Committee on Tuesday, and relayed a recent harrowing ordeal she had while riding one of the city’s buses.

“As (the driver) turned the corner onto Central Ave. there was this bang at the back of the bus,” she said. “What happened is the gear dropped in the transmission and then the bus jerked forward.”

The jerking motion of the bus caused Paradis to lunge forward and hit her head on the hard seat in front of her, injuring her neck in the process.

Paradis said she doesn’t blame the bus drivers, but said the buses themselves are in poor condition and to be inspected more often.

“Either get some new buses or get a different mechanic because this mechanic doesn’t know what he’s doing. I’m sorry but that’s just the way I feel,” she said.

Paradis said she used to ride the bus four to five times on any given day, but since her injury she is scared to ride on the big buses and will walk instead from place to place.

“When you’re scared to get on a bus to come home and you have to walk until your leg hurts you, that’s getting ridiculous for a senior,” she said.

Paradis’s comments and letter were referred to public works and administration for review.

Mayor Greg Dionne said he was concerned to hear the woman’s complaint.

“The contractor should be responsible for reporting that to us, what happened, how it happened and how did it all come about. That’s why in the report now we will require (the contractor) to report to us,” he said.

The city is in the process of purchasing its own fleet of buses, and has received Federal approval for a grant.

Dionne said the application was sent back for follow up regarding who is responsible for bus maintenance.
