Raiders hope Heid will bring size and experience to the back line

Sep 6, 2016 | 6:22 PM

Look up-way up, at the unfriendly giant.

The majority of WHL forwards will need heel lifts or a step-ladder to look the newest member of the Prince Albert Raiders in the eyes.

Nick Heid,19, has been acquired from the Medicine Hat Tigers for a seventh round choice in the 2017 Bantam Draft.

The 6’4” defenseman had five assists and 41 penalty minutes in 62 games last season, split between the Portland Winterhawks and Tigers.

Raiders general manager Curtis Hunt hopes the Fridley, MN product, who weighs in at 194 lbs, will play a significant role on team’s back line.

“Nick’s a big, strong, right-shot defenceman,” Hunt said. “We hope he can provide stability and depth to our young core.”

The addition of Heid leaves the Raiders with 33 players on their roster heading into Thursday’s preseason home opener against the Saskatoon Blades.

The teams close out the home and home series Saturday night in Warman.

Opening face-off and broadcast time for both games is 7 p.m. Thursday’s game can be heard on 900 CKBI with Saturday’s game being carried on MIX 101 FM.
