Woods wins Tetrathlon at provincials

Chris Woods can call himself the best athlete in Saskatchewan high school track and field.

The veteran from St. Mary won the Tetrathlon at the Provincial High School Track and Field championships in Regina.

His total of 2,465 points was the best among all Sr. Boys in the four event competition, which included the 100 m sprint, 800 m run, long jump and shot put. Competitors earned points for each event based on their performances.

Woods was among six gold medalists from Prince Albert and area.

Calvin Napope of St. Louis captured the Jr. Boys High Jump, Austin Strauss of St. Mary grabbed gold in the Sr. Boys 400 and silver in the Sr. Boys 200.

Taylor Strauss sprinted to victory in the Jr. Girl’s 100 m. She barely missed out on winning the sprint double by finishing 1-100th of a second behind the winner in the 200 m.  

Damian Grujic of Carlton won the Sr. Boys Triple Jump, while Thompson Weegar of St. Mary won the Sr. Boys 100 m in the closest race of the weekend with Karson Lehner of Carlton finishing 3rd. He was just 2-100th’s of a second behind Weegar in a photo finish for all three medals.

Nayan Chand of St. Mary also captured two medals with a silver in the Sr. Boys 100 m hurdles, and bronze in the 400 m, Grujic took silver in the Sr. Boys Pole Vault, and Hannah Walker earned a silver in the Midget Girls 3000 m, and bronze in the 800 m.

St. Mary also captured its third 4-A team title in the last five years.
