Sask. Rivers hope to welcome Syrian Refugees this June

The Saskatchewan Rivers Public School Division’s (SRPSD) meeting yesterday, May 16 came up with two dates to welcome Syrian refugees.

“Right now, we are looking at Thursday, June 8 or Monday, June 13, but if our facilities or other events conflict with that, then we will move that to fall gathering,” Saskatchewan Rivers Public School Division  board chair Barry Hollick, said.

SRPSD hopes to get funding from the federal government to provide more assistance to students. However, if they are not able to get funding, other means from the school division would be considered.

“The federal government was the initiator to bring these refugees in from Syria, but they have not supplied any funding to the school divisions, which are funded provincially,” he said. “If the federal government can assist with funding to be able to cover some expenses where we are hiring tutors to work with the students, it will be a great financial benefit.”

Apart from entertainment plans and activities for the children to play, invitations will not only be sent to the students in the system but their parents as well. This, Hollick said, is a good opportunity to meet with them and their parents and give them an official welcome into the school division in Prince Albert.

“We (will) put the resources there and people to work with them with their language as well as the regular subjects. It’s a work in progress and we are putting our resources forward to ensure that they get a good education and learn English as quickly as possible,” he said.
