City looking to revamp downtown P.A.

May 5, 2016 | 6:39 PM

Business owners and city staff are planning future investments to keep the local economy alive, particularly in the downtown core.

City director, John Guenther said a recent forum was held to bring together business owners and start networking for development within the city.

“The goal is to build towards an economic development advisory council,” he said. “We’ll start to build those networking opportunities and have people think about what that could look like.”

As for the Gateway Mall, Guenther said the business will start to come back once they begin to revamp and stimulate the downtown area.

“From a planning perspective, we’re looking at recasting the downtown and looking at how that, from a business point, can thrive,” he said. “Central Avenue will need to have a full redesign over the next couple of years because of the infrastructure that’s there.”

This includes investing in fixing old sewer lines within the City, resurfacing Central Avenue and design restructuring within the downtown area. He said the area has great potential, especially with the under-developed river front.

“It’s a tremendous asset and a real focal point for the City. Especially as it connects to downtown…that whole river front is really important,” Guenther said.

With a large retail market serving 195,000 people in the city and area, he said retail businesses are doing well and there are new businesses coming in all the time.
