Family’s relay for life kicks off with excitement

Apr 30, 2016 | 3:46 PM

A local family is putting the fun in fundraiser.

The Family Fun Carnival on May 7 will be hosted by the “Cancer Killers”, a Relay for Life team raising funds for the Canadian Cancer Society.

The carnival will be jam-packed with events like games, a bake table, a Chinese auction, silent auction, a magician, a country jam show, card readings, hay rides and tunes from Maxwell Music.

This is the Cancer Killers’ third year participating in the Relay for Life. Team lead, Ashley Gee, said participating in the relay is something close to team members’ hearts.

“We’ve had lots of family members and friends who’ve passed away from cancer,” Gee said. “But more importantly my dad has had cancer for about 12 years and so he still struggles with that each day. He’s doing chemo(therapy) right now and (it’s) just kind of a way to show our honour and appreciation to him and pay back the cancer society for everything they’ve done for him.”

As for how the team came up with its name, Gee said “we’ve just kind of heard so many things and we’ve had so many family members sick and our dad sick and stuff like that, it’s just kind of a name [that means] we want to get rid of cancer, you know?”

Last year, over 300 communities across the country participated in the Relay for Life which raised close to $34 million.

The carnival will be held at the Christopher Lake legion hall from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is $5.

The Relay for Life takes place June 3 to 4 at Max Clunie field in Prime Minister’s Park.
