Burkitt’s Flowers: Celebrating 80 years in business

After 80 years and three generations Burkitts Flowers in Prince Albert continues to provide Prince Albert residents with not only lovely floral arrangements but also great customer service.

The family tradition of Burkitt’s Flowers began in 1936 when Fred Burkitt purchased what was then known as Saskatchewan Greenhouses. Back then the flower shop was an assortment of greenhouses growing various flowers that were in season including mums, azaleas and cyclamen, poinsettias at Christmas and Easter lilies at Easter. During that time bundles of flower arrangements were also kept in the basement of the Burkitt’s family home before they opened their first florist shop in Prince Albert’s downtown.

“My dad worked hours and hours to build the business up,” said Burkitt’s daughter and former owner Kay Griffin. “He worked seven days a week to do what he could to get the business going, doing lots of bedding plants and that kind of thing, way back then, so people had something for their gardens.”

Burkitt’s Flowers currently displays a variety of fresh flower arrangements and artificial flower arrangements that can be purchased either pre-made from their showroom or customized to your liking.

Kay who took over ownership of the shop from her father in the 70’s before also retiring said the business has undergone a number of changes since its inception including the destruction of the greenhouses in 1975.

Today the current flower shop sits where those greenhouses once stood and Griffin’s daughter Susan Chickowski currently owns and manages the store.

After 80 years in business customers to Burkitt’s Flowers can feel at ease knowing that no matter the event or milestone they celebrate, the staff at Burkitt’s have the experience to get their flower arrangements done efficiently.

“So many people are amazed that we are still here and that a Burkitt still runs the store,” said Chickowski. “We get phone calls from customers all over the world who can’t believe it and still remember when my grandfather was running it.”

Chickowski assures that after 80 years in business their customers can feel at ease knowing that no matter the event or milestone they are celebrating, the staff at Burkitt’s Flowers have the experience needed to get their flower arrangements done efficiently.

At Burkitt’s Flowers they offer a variety of traditionally inspired arrangements including sweet grass and other First Nations inspired items.

“What our customers order from us is what they receive, there are no surprises,” said Chickowski. “We have been here long enough and been around the block enough times so we know what we are doing.”

“We give the best service possible and always go that extra mile to ensure our customers remain happy,” she added.
