Sask. NDP hitting campaign trail early

Mar 3, 2016 | 11:35 AM

The premier has until next Tuesday to drop the writ for the Saskatchewan election, but the NDP hasn’t noticed. The opposition is already in full campaign mode.

The NDP has all 61 candidates in place and have begun to roll out platform announcements.

The party recently made announcements to reinstate the film tax credit and outlined a plan to address mental health issues.

NDP leader Cam Broten says the team is ready to go, so why not start.

“We are ready, we are working and we decided to fire up the engines,” he said on Wednesday.

According to election rules, the premier has until Tuesday to drop the writ for the vote on April 4.

Despite being ahead of the game by several days, Broten doesn’t think anyone will suffer election fatigue.

“There’s a lot to talk about and I am not worried about a shortage of concerns and I am also not worried about a shortage of what we want to talk about and accomplish.”

If Broten’s predecessor Dwain Lingenfelter was seen as cold and aloof, Broten is radiating energy and sunshine and he hopes it will dispel any rain on election day.

The Saskatchewan Party has all 61 candidates in place as well, but the business of government continues for many until the writ officially drops.
