LaRonge Mayor makes a run for provincial office

One of Canada’s youngest-ever mayors, is attempting to make the leap into provincial politics.

LaRonge Mayor Thomas Sierzycki, will be taking a leave of absence on March 4 in order to focus on his campaign as Saskatchewan Party candidate in the Cumberland Region. The provincial election takes place Monday, April 4.

“I think it’s very important to have that strategic voice and someone who is in government that can really tell the story of the northern people and of the northern communities that need representation in Regina,” Sierzycki said of his political aspirations.

Sierzycki was first elected as a councillor at the age of 18 and became mayor by 21. He was born and raised in Saskatchewan’s north and says the area is unique in a number of ways. Demographically, the region is much younger, it faces different socio-economic challenges and the economy consists of different industries than the rest of the province.

Sierzycki has chosen the Saskatchewan Party as he believes in their northern track record. He likes the party’s First Nations education strategies, specifically working towards closing the graduation gap, and says he’d like to continue the work that’s being done in that area.

While his party’s official platform has yet to come out, Sierzycki said a personal focus of his is education; specifically early childhood development.

“Every dollar invested in early childhood development has significant returns in the long term,” he said.

Sierzycki said the north is the future of the province and everyone in the region needs to be on the same footing in order to contribute.

If he is unsuccessful in his bid for provincial office, legislation allows Sierzycki to return to his seat as LaRonge’s mayor.
