Greg Quick resigns as Riders’ defensive coordinator

Dec 5, 2015 | 7:47 AM

You can add to the list of job openings with the Saskatchewan Roughriders.

The Riders announced late on Friday afternoon that defensive coordinator Greg Quick has resigned from the position after just one season.

No replacement was named.

Quick joined the Riders coaching staff ahead of the 2015 season after spending time as the Montreal Alouettes linebackers coach. Quick was hired to replace long-time defensive coordinator Richie Hall, who was told by then head coach Corey Chamblin that he wouldn’t return in that role.

Hall ended up joining the Winnipeg Blue Bombers as their defensive coordinator.

Under Quick, but more so Chamblin, the Riders had perhaps the worst defence in the CFL in 2015, ranking last or near the bottom in just about every major defensive category.

The move opens the door for current Edmonton Eskimos head coach Chris Jones to come to Saskatchewan.

Jones was expected to interview with president and CEO Craig Reynolds on Friday for the vacant general manager and head coach roles with the team. Jones could also add defensive coordinator to his title as he held that job in Edmonton as well.

Interim general manager Jeremy O’Day, Stampeders assistant general manager John Murphy and Redblacks assistant general manager Brock Sunderland are also expected interview for the job.
