Recount called for Desnethé-Missinippi-Churchill River

There will be a recount in the riding of Desnethé-Missinippi-Churchill River.

Elections Canada confirming the news on their website on Friday.

NDP’s Georgina Jolibois was elected MP with a margin of only 70 votes between her and Liberal candidate Lawrence Joseph. Conservative candidate Rob Clarke was only 1,000 votes behind Joseph making it a three-way fight to the finish.

With such a small margin between first and second place, talks of a recount emerged, however under Elections Canada principle, an automatic recount would not be called.

According to Elections Canada, an automatic recount would occur if there was a gap of .001 between votes. In this particular case, that would mean 30 votes or less.

With 70 votes between them, a recount would have to be requested by the Liberal party and be awarded approval from a judge.

Joseph was critical of the voting process claiming a lack of ballots at some polling stations.

Elections Canada have disputed those claims, saying everyone was given the opportunity to vote.

The results of the recount, which will take place on Monday, will be published on the Elections Canada.
