CROP REPORT: Farmers take advantage of dry conditions

Oct 1, 2015 | 4:53 PM

Farmers are overcoming delays caused by rain as weather finally clears up across the province.

So far, 74 per cent of crops are in the bins while 19 per cent are swathed or ready to straight-cut.

According to this week’s Crop Report from Saskatchewan Agriculture they’re nearly on par with the five year average of 71 per cent combined and 20 per cent swathed.

Regionally, farmers in southern Saskatchewan are further ahead, at 85 or 88 per cent combined, compared to those in the North, with around 60 per cent combined.

When it comes to individual crops, 87 per cent of mustard, 79 per cent of durum, 77 per cent of barley, 72 per cent of spring wheat, 70 per cent of canola, 46 per cent of soybeans and 33 per cent of flax have been combined.

Almost 90 per cent of topsoil moisture conditions are rated as adequate. Hay land moisture conditions are 76 per cent adequate.

Frost caused minimal damage in many areas of the province due to the maturity of crops at this stage. At this time, overall yields are about average, although they tend to vary across the province.
