CROP REPORT: Rain delays harvest further

Sep 18, 2015 | 7:07 AM

Despite wet weather holding some farmers back, harvest continues to advance across the province.

So far, 52 per cent of crops have been combined and 30 per cent have been swathed, according to Saskatchewan Agriculture’s weekly Crop Report.

These numbers mean farmers are ahead of schedule, with the five-year average for this time of year set at 42 per cent combines and 33 per cent swathed.

In the central parts of the province, harvest is a little further behind. In the west central region, 37 per cent of crops are combined, while in the east central region 37 per cent are combined.

Out of the crops harvested, 86 per cent of peas, 76 per cent of lentils and 70 per cent of durum have been estimated to fall into to the top two grade qualities.

Still, with weather being an issue, some crops have been left with bleaching and sprouting.

Overall yields are about average, although they vary region by region.

Rainfall ranged from trace amounts to over an inch in certain parts of the province. This has left 82 per cent of crop land with adequate moisture.

Some areas of the province received frost but damage has been minimal.
