Saskatoon to host 2017 Canadian Country Music Awards

Jun 18, 2015 | 1:35 PM

On a small stage in a dark-lit Saskatoon music venue, Jess Moskaluke fills the room with a song about cheap wine and cigarettes.

Moskaluke, who is from Langenburg, Sask., played her hit single after the announcement that the Canadian Country Music Awards are coming to Saskatoon in 2017.

It’s part of Country Music Week, where fans can take in live music at cabarets and festivals around the city. The event was held in Saskatoon in 2012, but Don Green, president of the Canadian Country Music Association, said they were eager to come back.

“[Saskatoon] has amazing venues. It’s got the accommodations; it’s got the community support.”

Green said this time around, the association wants to add more public events to Country Music Week. He also thanked former SaskMusic director Derek Bachman, who passed away in December, for helping get the winning bid.

Around 40,000 tickets are expected to be sold for Country Music Week. It will run from September 7-10, 2017, with the awards show broadcasting across Canada on the last night.
