Carlton track athletes striving for success

May 17, 2015 | 12:15 PM

Damian Grujic and Thomas Macintosh are both Grade 11 athletes on Carlton Comprehensive High School’s Crusader track team who are looking for ways to build off their success in the indoor season.

Grujic qualified for provincials in pole vault, long, triple, and high jump. Although he likes all of his events, pole vault in particular stood out to him.

“I was doing track all throughout elementary and I just learned about pole vaulting, since you couldn’t do it in elementary I watched a lot of videos of it. So when I entered high school I jumped at the opportunity to try it out,” Grujic said.

Grujic’s best placing at provincials has been second in pole vault, and he has been training hard since then.

“Since March I have been going to Saskatoon every Monday to train with the Huskies coaches and now I have started training outdoors twice a week with my track team,” Grujic said.

Macintosh runs the 800 and 1,500 metre. He got fifth in the 800 metre and placed sixth in the 1,500 metre at provincials and wants to keep improving this year.

“Heading into this season I’m going for some stronger times, with breaking some of my personal bests in the indoor season, so I’m hoping that can carry through to the outdoor season,” Macintosh said.

Macintosh has worked with a lot of coaches through his track career but one has stood out.

“The most inspirational coach I have had was Mr. Walker. He has been my indoor track coach since my Grade 9 year. He is always pushing us to do our best and is helping us in training and is just a great coach overall.”

The city track meet is May 20 and 21 at Carlton.
