VIDEOS: Prince Albert lifts heavy at Sask. Open

Apr 19, 2015 | 12:29 PM

A few dozen competitive weightlifters challenged their strength in Prince Albert over the weekend at the Sask. Open.

SaskPro Crossfit hosted one of the Saskatchewan Weightlifting Association’s last events of the year on Saturday.

Prince Albert was strongly represented by nine athletes at the open. Other competitors travelled from Lloydminster, Unity, Saskatoon and Regina.

Brothers James and Josh Kapacila finished first in their respective categories.

The battle of the Kapacilla brothers, James was good with 124 but missed his 3rd lift.

Meanwhile older brother Josh makes his 3rd at 128 beating the younger bro by 2kg total.

Brayden Tournier finished second in his category, and another honourable mention goes to Prince Albert’s Colton Anderson.

“I could have done a little bit better but I’m still recovering from a surgery so I felt good today. Still a few things I need to work on. Squatting, strengthening that,” Tournier said.

Jason Trinh from Saskatoon set a new provincial record with a clean and jerk of 142 kilograms.

He said he knew he had to dig.

“I felt like I had it in me so I just kind of stuck to my guns and kept pushing.”

It’s not always the biggest guys who come out on top.

“It’s mostly technique. You’re gonna find guys that are really, really strong that aren’t technically sound and don’t do as well as guys that aren’t as strong,” Trinn said.

“So it’s a great sport in that sense. You see, you know, someone who’s a smooth mover, who’s got good technique. Those are the ones who end up on top.”

Whitney Darchuk was the last lifter in session one. Ends it on a good note.
