Carlton player wants to smash his way to the top

Rahul Parekh is a Grade 11 student playing for the Carlton  Comprehensive High School Senior A Badminton Team.

Parehk has been playing badminton from a very young age and wants to keep improving his game.

“I began playing for the first time at around eight years old and it was one of the best experiences of my life. I haven’t stopped since. I started playing competitively in Grade 6 at Vickers and continued to train and build my game through elementary to Carlton,” said Parehk.

Parehk plays a lot of club badminton to keep growing as a badminton player.

“I began playing club in Grade 7 and was able to play competitively with adults who were much better than me. I continued getting better and today I can beat the adults that once gave me trouble in the past. Playing club has also let me compete in the Saskatchewan Badminton Provincial League with kids in my age group representing the Prince Albert Badminton Club,” Parehk said.

Last year Parehk took Carlton singles to the furthest it’s ever been by winning the Prince Albert and area conference. This year he said he hopes to make it to provincials as he lost in districts last year.

“Last year I made it to districts but lost a tough match. It was a good learning experience for me and motivated me to do that much better this year. As for club it’s a learning experience for me as I play with some top class national ranked players but I hope to one day break the top five in Saskatchewan.”

In club badminton Parehk plays with teens up to 19 years old, and is currently ranked seventh.

Districts takes place on May 4th.
