SaskWater customers could pay more

Feb 5, 2015 | 12:28 PM

Some people may have to dig a little deeper in their wallets for water after this spring when SaskWater raises its rates.

About 36,000 people will be affected, but SaskWater said it will be up to the towns and rural municipalities (RMs) whether this increase is passed on to customers.

Jurisdictions that will be affected include:

Cities – Martensville, Warman
Towns – Aberdeen, Allan, Dalmeny, Hague, Lanigan, Osler
Villages – Bethune, Bradwell, Clavet, Disley, Elbow, Elstow, Hepburn, Marquis, Riverhurst, Tuxford, Vanscoy, Viscount, Resort Village of Shields
Hamlets – Guernsey
Rural Municipalities – Blucher, Colonsay, Corman Park, Dundurn, Rosedale, Vanscoy

Potable water is going up by either seven or nine per cent, depending on whether the customer is residential or commercial, this May, and next May as well.

SaskWater said the average impact to a household will be about $5.10 more per month in 2015 and $5.45 more per month in 2016.

People receiving non-potable water will have a one per cent increase, except for large industrial customers served from the Saskatoon South East Water Supply system.

“This modest rate increase will assist SaskWater in addressing the costs associated with refurbishing aging infrastructure and expanding its systems to meet our growing population,” said Scott Moe, minister responsible for the Saskatchewan Water Corporation.
