One break leads to another, City works to fix water main

Feb 3, 2015 | 3:55 PM

Work to fix a broken water main in the Cornerstone area that snarled traffic for much of Monday is nearly complete.

The City of Prince Albert has been dealing with a significant water main break at the corner of 15th Street East and Sixth Avenue. Efforts to repair the break and the related valve leak led to unplanned, unannounced lane restrictions at the intersection.

Late in the evening on Sunday, the City received a telephone call about water seeping out of the ground at the intersection. Crews attempted to isolate the break that evening, in preparation for a “dig” on Monday, said operations manager Alain Trudel.

By Monday, water pooled by the side of the road and traffic slowed to a crawl in the afternoon and evening hours.

Crews worked through the night to repair the leaking valve, and worked on the broken main on Tuesday.

Trudel said the cause of the leak appeared to be a shear, or crack, in the pipe.

“That’ll be just typical winter, probably a little bit of shifting is starting to go on down there. You know, frost is starting to get a little deeper underground. I understand it’s about six feet underground now. So, it’s getting into the vicinity of some of the pipes.”

Trudel said the pipe is expected to be repaired Tuesday afternoon or evening.
