FSIN Chief to be sentenced for drunk driving today

Mar 15, 2011 | 6:59 AM

The Chief of the Federation of Saskatchewan Indian Nations will learn his fate Tuesday morning.

Guy  Lonechild has admitted to driving while under the influence in September of 2009. The FSIN Chief was pulled over by police while driving home from a game of golf. His sentencing was suppose to happen next week in Rosthern. But his lawyer Jeff Howe tells News Talk Radio that wouldn't have worked.

“March twenty-third didn't work for Mr. Lonechild's schedule. The Chief wanted to be in Regina for the announcement of the provincial budget,” said Howe.

The case has threatened to force the FSIN Chief from the helm. Former FSIN Chiefs have been calling on Lonechild to resign. They say he's not only thrown the organization into disarray, he's also set a very bad example.

Lonechild refuses to step down. But a non-confidence motion expected this June could lead to his departure as leader.
