Spring flooding top of mind at SARM convention

The Saskatchewan Association of Rural Municipalities Convention has opened in Saskatoon with concerns about spring flooding.

It's anybody's guess as to how things will go when the snow finally starts to melt, said SARM President David Marit.

“If none of the snow melts in the month of March and we start losing it in mid April. It could be very severe,” he said.

However, Marit said he is encouraged to see municipalities already preparing for the worst.

The Rural Municipality of Corman Park is already filling sand bags, draining ditches and warning home owners.

“We've never been this proactive as we have been this spring,” said Darryl Altman, the director of operations for the rural municipality.

Marit believes the communities that know they are going to have problem this year are ready to go.

The provincial government has set aside $22 million to help communities with flood preventative measures. 

The annual SARM conventions runs until Thursday.
