Day of dance donates to creative program

Oct 19, 2014 | 12:02 PM

About 65 dancers from various dance schools around the Prince Albert area took part in a fundraiser for Creative Kids on Saturday. Dancers collected pledges on behalf of Creative Kids and danced the day away at Riverside Community School.

Crystal Clarke with Lakeland District for Sport, Culture and Recreation said their main goal was to draw awareness for Creative Kids, a charitable program which seeks to help reduce costs for participation in cultural activities.

“We’re always looking for fundraising opportunities, sponsorships and donations as well as involvement from the community to help get the word out and promote to those who need the program,” she said.

She said Creative Kids is the first provincial funding program of its kind for cultural programming. Volunteers in the cultural community in Saskatchewan saw the need for it and found funding opportunities through KidSport and JumpStart.

“SaskCulture as well as these volunteers worked hard and brought to life the idea of Creative Kids,” she said.

Clarke said the dancers taking part were proud that they were able to help people who may not otherwise have a chance to participate.

“We have some kids that have raised over $300 for today’s event so it’s quite incredible what these kids have gone out to do,” she said.

15 year old Caitlin Horner has been dancing for the past 12 years and said the Day of Dance is important for people in the community.

“It gets to help people who don’t have the income to do what we love to do and have the chance to express themselves,” she said.

Joanne Neudorf, a parent of two girls taking part in dance, Carleena and Shayleah, said she is glad they took part in the day.

“They’re having a ball. They are having so much fun and they’re learning so much.  I’m so glad we came,” she said.

The day ended with a showcase where all the dancers were able to show off what they learned during the various workshops.

Clarke said she hopes the Day of Dance becomes an annual event.

“We were approached by two dance studios in Prince Albert to get it started and bring everyone together for a good cause and there’s been great support and great comments about it,” she said.
