Puppies found at dump get a new home

Oct 10, 2014 | 5:31 PM

Two puppies that were found abandoned at a dump near Prince Albert earlier in September now have a chance to live a healthy life.

A woman who saw the puppies amongst the trash in a northern community left a message with the Prince Albert SPCA after she took them back to Prince Albert with her, said Leanne Roberts, SPCA’s director of operations.

“We’re very glad that she contacted us for help. Unfortunately this is something we see almost daily so nothing really shocks or surprises me anymore sadly,” said Roberts.

Leo and Jemma, about three months old at the time, needed medical attention and had to be put on drugs for a month.  Even after they were given a clean bill of health and given their treatments, Roberts said they were not doing well with the cold weather in Prince Albert.

Roberts decided the best thing to do was to send them to a warmer climate.  She contacted Vancouver Island Dogs Rescue Society.  They agreed to take the puppies without any hesitation.

“We’ve really formed some great contacts with rescue based organizations … we transferred out well over 100 dogs last year. Without those partnerships, a lot of dogs would be sitting here and we may have to turn dogs away,” she said.

Roberts said it’s important for people to realize the animals at the SPCA don’t just sit there until they get adopted.

“We provide the best care that we can for the animals that we look after and we have formed these partnerships to help us place animals that would otherwise be hard to place or aren’t necessarily what people are looking for here,” she said.

Leo and Jemma finished their last treatments on October 2 and were sent to Vancouver Island Dogs Rescue Society soon after.  The puppies, now about four months old, arrived in foster care on October 8 and are settling in.

“They need to be spayed and neutered first.  I honestly don’t think it will take them long to get adopted but they just needed to go somewhere where the climate was a little bit more moderate,” she said.
