Retired Nipawin mayor recognized for service

The longest serving elected official in Nipawin has been recognized by his peers with a prestigious award.

Glen Day, who retired from municipal politics before the 2009 election, is the 2011 recipient of the Scoop Lewry Award.

It’s given out annually by the Saskatchewan Urban Municipalities Association to recognize outstanding service in municipal government.

“It’s a feel good thing, there is no doubt about it,” said Day, who was surprised by the recognition.
Day said he never intended to leave a legacy when he was first elected to council in 1980, but feels he made a worthy contribution during his time.

“I think one thing that certainly improved, due to the efforts of not just me, but council at the time was improved cooperation and communication with surrounding municipalities and First Nations in the area. I think that was needed and pretty significant.”

Day was nominated by the present town council who he credits with helping him serve as long as he did.

“One person of course gets singled out to receive the award, but it (has) to be cooperative effort from all involved,” he said.

Day served nearly three decades, including 12 years as mayor before deciding to retire prior to the 2009 municipal election.

He says the award ranks right up there in his lifetime and has it displayed proudly on his living room wall.
