Pulp Mill production may hinge on new agreement

Jul 17, 2014 | 6:26 AM

The start-up of production at the Prince Albert Pulp Mill now hinges on the renegotiation of a non-competition agreement, according to a number of sources that spoke to paNOW on Wednesday.

The mill’s owner, Paper Excellence is in the midst of discussions with Domtar, paNOW has learned. The two companies are said to be looking to renegotiate its purchase deal.

The terms of the original purchase agreement, signed in 2011, bars Paper Excellence from producing bulk paper products. Instead, Paper Excellence planned to produce Rayon, a form of dissolving pulp used to make clothing.

Forest industry sources told paNOW that Domtar was to make a decision this week and an announcement would follow soon after.
