Prairie North Co-op celebrates 100 years

Jun 21, 2014 | 4:38 PM

It’s a milestone that only a handful of businesses can celebrate.

Throughout this past week the Prairie North Co-op has been holding events to commemorate 100 years in business.

Darren Rokochy, food manager at Prairie North Co-op in Melfort Mall said they held a golf tournament, barbecues and other events to celebrate. On Wednesday around 500 people gathered at the Kerry Vickers Centre, including the mayor and an MLA to join in the festivities.

“It’s a hundred years in business, which is very rare in any business,” Rokochy said.

With the Co-op running for so long in the community, employees have been a staple—some working for over 25 years with the company, according to Rokochy.

“It’s been huge. They’ve been having a blast. It’s been a lot of well-wishers, a lot of positive congratulatory stuff. To hit that milestone is a huge accomplishment for any business, like I said, and for us here at Prairie North it’s a very proud week for what we’ve done so far,” he said.

Rokochy joked that the plan for the next 100 years is to “survive.”

“To hit the hundred is huge and now it’s just going to grow and be successful for the next hundred years. [We plan] to stay modern, to stay current and to best serve our members for the next 100 years to come.”

For the last day of celebrations there was a barbecue and daily specials in Melfort, as well as a barbecue at their St. Brieux location.

“It’s been a long week, but very fun and eventful.”

He said this location is one of the first created and he thanked the members for all their dedication.

“It’s a fantastic celebration, not just for the business but for the communities that they serve.”
