New president of First Nations University of Canada to start in July

May 27, 2014 | 4:31 PM

The First Nations University of Canada will be under new leadership starting in July.

After searching for a new president for more than a year, the university announced that Dr. Mark Dockstator has accepted the role. He is from the Oneida First Nation in southwestern Ontario, and has a doctorate of law. Dockstator has been teaching indigenous studies at Trent University since 1997.

“After meeting with many candidates we thought that Dr. Dockstator was the best choice for this position and we’re delighted to welcome him to the university starting July 1,” said Board Chair David Sharpe.

Sharpe says it was important to find a candidate who had both impeccable academic credentials and a solid understanding of First Nations cultural values and practices.
