PA police officer gets provincial honour

Apr 2, 2014 | 5:38 PM

One Prince Albert police officer was honoured by the Crown on Wednesday, along with four others in the province.

Inspector Jeff Rowden from the Prince Albert Police Service received Commissioned officer designation in a ceremony at Government House.

Commissioned officers can command their service after receiving authority directly from the Crown.

“The dedication and leadership of these officers help keep Saskatchewan a safe place to live, work and raise a family,” said Corrections and Policing Minister Christine Tell in a statement. “These commissions truly demonstrate the strength of our province’s police services.”

Four other city police officers were honoured from Saskatchewan including Inspector Richard McKenna from the Moose Jaw Police Service, Inspector Sheree Ortman from the Regina Police Service, Inspector Mitch Yuzdepski from the Saskatoon Police Service and Inspector Corey Zaharuk from the Regina Police Service.

This type of recognition used to be solely for RCMP officers to recognize their achievement of a senior rank. In 2005, after amendments to The Police Act, 1990, Saskatchewan became the first province to present Lieutenant Governor's Commissions to senior ranking municipal police officers.
