Council eyes revamp of bylaws covering stripteases

Jan 8, 2014 | 6:33 AM

Prince Albert will soon wade into the striptease debate, with plans to amend the city’s bylaws after the province changed its liquor laws to allow stripteases in bars.

At the outset of the new year, the provincial legislation regarding stripteases came into effect. Late last year, the City of Saskatoon changed its bylaws, setting limits on when and where this form of adult entertainment would take place.

The City of Prince Albert hasn’t fielded any requests or applications from businesses looking to hold stripteases, according to Mayor Greg Dionne.

“And we will be looking to make amendments to our bylaw to cover that, where they’ll be allowed,” he said on Monday.

City officials are still discussing which changes they plan to make to the existing bylaws, and they’re looking at what amendments other cities have passed, Dionne said.

“Like some cities have allowed them in light-industrial areas, so they’re not in neighbourhood pubs or bars or stuff like that. So, what we’re doing is we’re looking at what other centres are doing first. There’s no use trying to re-invent the wheel if the solution’s out there from [another] city.”

The issue is expected to come to council within the next month.

“It’s funny, because we all knew they were coming, but no city seemed to do anything until it actually come along because we were dealing with the other amendments, ” Dionne said. “And I can’t see PA jumping into the fire right away before the bigger cities.”
