H1N1 spreading throughout local health regions

Jan 8, 2014 | 5:39 AM

Public demand for the H1N1 vaccine remains high in the province.

The Prince Albert Parkland Health Region experienced a shortage this week, resulting in the flu clinic at McIntosh Mall being cancelled on Monday. On Tuesday, after a shipment of the vaccine arrived in the city, people waited in line for close to an hour to get their flu shot.

It's the same situation in the Kelsey Trail Health Region.

“At this time of year, we don't expect to give more vaccine, but because of the more cases there is surging demand,” medical health officer, Dr. Mohammed Khan.

Across the province, there have been hundreds of cases of H1N1, and six people have died as a result of contracting the virus. The Kelsey Trail Health Region has so far seen about 20 positive cases of H1N1.

“At the beginning of the season we typically request that people get their shots, probably some people decided to, but because of these more cases, and reported deaths, people are calling public health for the flu shot,” said Khan.

The health region is encouraging people to take precautions.

Khan said the way to prevent spreading the flu is to stay home if you are feeling sick, and to wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water.
