National march against women’s violence makes its way into Gateway Mall in PA

Dec 6, 2013 | 2:51 PM

It may be Christmastime, but a somber march took over the Gateway Mall at noon on Friday.

About 50 people silently walked through the mall as part of the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women.

Dec. 6 is the same day in 1989 when 14 women were killed because of their gender at Polytechnique, the University of Montreal.

People held signs that represented both the national and local issue of violence against women.

The name and age of one of those 14 women from Polytechnique was written on one side of each sign.

On the other side were details of a Saskatchewan woman who died or were injured due to violence.

In the crowd were a few local representatives. Coun. Rick Orr represented the city in the march, and Richard Ahenakew, chair of the Prince Albert Board of Police Commissioners, walked as well.

The march was sponsored by the Co-operative Health Centre, Community Against Family Violence, and Ending Violence Against Women Committee.
