UPDATED: Guilty plea in Saskatoon murder case

Nov 1, 2013 | 11:29 AM

Kyle Darren Halbauer pleaded guilty to the murder of Lorry Anne Santos at Saskatoon Court of Queens Bench Friday morning.

Halbauer, 23, was charged with Santos' killing along with 30-year-old Joshua David Petrin and 23-year-old James Wayne O'Hagan.

The three were alleged to have gunned down Santos', a 34-year-old mother of four, at her home in Sept. 2012.

Police previously indicated that the three men were all members of an Albertan white supremacist gang called the White Boy Posse and that Santos' killing was a case of mistaken identity.

Court heard that Halbauer didn't fire the shot that killed Santos.

Halbauer and another accused went to the home to kill an ex-member of the gang, but it turned out to be the wrong home.

“Unfortunately the Santos family became victimized through this,” Police Chief Clive Weighill said on the John Gormley Show Friday following the guilty plea.

“Fortunately we don't have many instances like this where you have some collateral damage when drug groups are battling each other,” Weighill said.

Halbauer's lawyer said his client confessed to his role in the crime after watching video of Santos' family.

A first degree murder conviction comes with an automatic life sentence with no chance of parole for 25 years.
