Neighbour shocked by fatal shooting north of Prince Albert

Oct 30, 2013 | 5:16 PM

Once a picture of rural tranquility, the view from Clem Marchildon’s front window now resembles a television crime show.

Just a few hundred yards away, police cars and crime scene tape block the entrance to Larry McDougald’s residence as RCMP continue to investigate a fatal shooting that took place on his property.

McDougald, 66, has been arrested and charged with the murder of his 45-year-old son Terry, as well as attempted murder and pointing a firearm in relation to the incident.

Marchildon said he’s shocked by the shooting and saddened by its senselessness, “It’s very sad news because there’s no reason for it, it could have been avoided.”

The McDougalds had been dealing with financial troubles, said Marchildon, which could have led to the deadly confrontation, “I think there were a lot of things to do with his family and the banks.”

According to an RCMP release, the shooting arose from an ongoing property dispute that turned violent when Terry and two other men showed up at Larry’s property to claim property.

RCMP have been at the scene since Tuesday morning when the shooting occurred. They told Marchildon that some of the bullets from the shooting ended up very close to his house and even investigated the outside walls for ballistics evidence. “Apparently there were quite a few gunshots and some of the shots came towards the house here,” he said.

Marchildon has lived in the house for 35 years and actually purchased the home from McDougald. McDougald moved to the property where the alleged murder happened after the sale was completed.

Marchildon said McDougald was a “hard worker who had a lot of things to do.” He said he had been employed in a range of occupations including cattle ranching, trucking and as an auctioneer.

Although he said he didn’t remember seeing Terry McDougald at his father’s property in the past, he said he had a young family and a farm northwest of Prince Albert.
