Five teens face arson charges for garage fire in Regina

Oct 7, 2013 | 11:48 AM

Thanks to a vigilant neighbor, five teens are facing a bevy of charges stemming from a garage fire in Regina.

The Regina Police Service got a call just before 8 P.M. Sunday night about a garage on fire on the 1900 block of York Street. Shortly after they got another call from a neighbour who said he saw the garage lit on fire, and was following a group of people he thought were responsible.

Officers arrived and found the group leaving the area. Five teenage boys were arrested, and officers confiscated a fake gun, a hatchet, and a knife from them.

The Regina Police Service alleges that one of the teens had aimed a gun at a homeowner in the area earlier in the day.

One of the teens is 17, one is 15, two are 13 year old, and one is 12 years old. All five teens are under 18 years of age, so they can't be identified under the Youth Criminal Justice Act.

All five are being charged with arson with disregard for human life, but each has additional charges on top of that. The 17 year old is charged with possession of a weapon. The 15 year old is charged with possession of a weapon, and failure to comply. One 13 year old is charged with obstructing a police officer, the other is charged with possession of a weapon, pointing a firearm, and assault with a weapon. The 12 year old is also charged with obstructing a police officer.

The first appearance for all five is at 2 P.M. Monday.
