King George School celebrates 100th anniversary

Sep 27, 2013 | 5:28 PM

The King George Community Public School celebrated their 100th anniversary in Prince Albert on Friday.

The combination of alumni, former staff members, spouses, and their children made the event particularly special, said Sandie Kennedy, event organizer and teacher’s assistant at the King George Community Public School.

There was a tea party, walk-a-thon and a special memorabilia ceremony for a traditional, 25-year time capsule.

Everyone that came out had a chance to contribute to a time capsule. It will be re-opened in 25 years.

“What we’re going to re-bury this time is like, a time capsule from this year and we would assume would be opened at the 125th anniversary,” said Kennedy.

“We are asking all the guests today to write down their memories of King George and they’ll be buried in the time capsule and when each of the classrooms are finished they’re going to take their little contribution and they’re going to put it in the time capsule,” said Kennedy.

The school will then bury the capsule in May or June after the ground thaws.

The children enjoyed a pancake breakfast with family and friends Friday morning as well as an afternoon tea party.

The Friday event was only a portion of the events to take place in the next few weeks.

Students will have the chance to decorate the hallways of their school with artwork that reflects different time periods/eras.

Also, a local artist will paint a mural with the children to commemorate the school’s 100th anniversary.

Kennedy added that the school is important and significant in the community historically. A lot of Prince Albertans have fond memories in the building.
