Housing starts up

The third biggest year for housing starts since 1983.

Saskatchewan saw construction begin on nearly 59,000 new homes in 2010. Urban areas saw a combined increase of 55 per cent from 2009.

Rebound from 2009 was expected, but this goes behind a simple bounceback, said Michael Fabiyi with Canada Mortgage and Housing.

The Battlefords saw an 88 per cent increase from one year earlier. In Lloydminster housing starts were up 150 per cent. Fabiyi says the outlook is strong for 2011. But labour and available land is expected to hold housing starts to about 5,000.
