Alta. rainfall has city monitoring water levels

The floodwater in Alberta could be making its way to Prince Albert.

The Government of Alberta recently issued a high flow advisory for the North Saskatchewan River and the City of Prince Albert is aware.

“We’re anticipating a rise in the [North] Saskatchewan River over the next week or so,” said Prince Albert City Manager Robert Cotterill although no high river level warning has been issued.

“We’re probably are going to be doing a lot of things. Our problem right now is we have not got a flow accurate measure of what kind of flows we’re going to see and we won’t know for a while yet.”

Some of this water is also coming from the flooding on Little River Park, which isn’t getting any better.

“We don’t anticipate that there’s going to be much change over the next eight to 10 days. What will happen, is just more destruction and so really we need the water to recede to figure out exactly how bad and what we’re going to do,” Cotterill explained, adding they have staff checking in on the situation.

But the park isn’t his only concern.

“We are watching the bridge, underneath Highway 55 as well because debris is collecting on it and we are just keeping an eye on that,” he said.

At this point there is little that can be done except watch the situation unfold.

“Look at Calgary. Once [water] starts you get out of the way and you wait until it’s finished and then you deal with it.”

Cumberland House beginning evacuation process

With the high water flow coming through the North Saskatchewan River in combination with high flows on the South Saskatchewan River, severe flooding is expected for some communities east of Prince Albert.

The Ministry of Government Relations has been in contact with the affected communities and is beginning the evacuation process for Cumberland House in preparation.

Water flows are expected to reach this area by next week.
