Prince Albert continues with strong development

Nov 7, 2012 | 5:20 AM

Prince Albert continues on a trend of strong growth though this year's permits are higher in value as opposed to volume.

According to the City of Prince Albert, up to the end of October the city had 268 building permits valued at $97.1 million compared with $66.1 million by this time last year.

Broken down, the numbers came from 78 commercial and industrial permits valued at $68.9 million and 190 residential permits valued at $28.3 million.

In 2011, commercial and industrial permits were valued at $45.3 million and residential permits valued at $20.8 million.

City building inspector Kim Johnson said there were more permits in 2011, but the increase in value showed bigger, more important projects were going on this year.

“We’ve had fewer permits in the total number overall , but everything that comes through here is a lot more primary buildings, larger additions,” he said. “2011 had more, smaller projects, accessory buildings and small stuff. 2012 seems to be the year for getting the bigger stuff done.”

Johnson said the trend for strong growth in the city has continued for several years.

“It’s been basically pretty good, pretty steady from 2008 on. This year has been a big year for commercial-industrial in the city: new builds, renovations, upgrades and that type of thing,” he said, adding that it looked as if that trend would continue.

“We’re busy,” he said.
