Saskatchewan Roughriders trade for Eskimos receiver

Sep 5, 2012 | 5:50 PM

It wouldn't be a new week in Riderville without some kind of roster change.

The team announced on Wednesday that they've dealt the rights to non-import offensive lineman Matt O'Donnell and a fourth round draft pick in 2013 to the Edmonton Eskimos for receiver Greg Carr and a fifth round pick in 2013.

The Riders originally selected O'Donnell in the second round of the 2011 CFL draft, but he chose instead to peruse options south of the border not only in the NFL, but the NBA as well.

“I don't know if he burned his bridge,” said general manager Brendan Taman. “Quite frankly, he wasn't going to fit in here.”

Taman admitted on Wednesday that he had been trying to deal O'Donnell for a couple of days now, as it became very unlikely that he would be signing with the team anytime soon.

In Carr, the Riders pick up some more experience at the receiver position having played for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers and of course the Eskimos previously. He's a big body too, bringing with him a 6'6″ frame. In the last three seasons in the CFL he's wracked up over 1,400 yards receiving with nine touchdowns.

The timing might seem a little odd, considering the offense had it's best performance of the season last week, but head coach Corey Chamblin says it's all about depth.

“I'm pleased with it,” said Chamblin. “He's here and you never know how it may come back around to that.”
