SK marks second highest growth in export sales

According to a new report from Statistics Canada, Saskatchewan is bucking the uncertain economic trends for international exports.

The report says Saskatchewan had the second highest growth in export sales in Canada for the first six months of the year with a 16 per cent total increase.

Deputy Minister of the Economy, Kent Campbell says the highest growth by sector was in forestry products, at 85 per cent from the same period last year.

“A lot of the mills that had been closed for a period of time are now operating and producing, the U.S. housing market is slowly starting to recover and we are starting to see a peice of that market,” Campbell said.

Campbell says export sales increased across the board, especially in the agriculture and energy sectors. In fact Saskatchewan had the second best growth in the country beaten only by PEI.

“I think it just sort of shows that a lot of the products that we produce continue to be in demand globally which is very good news because we are a very export-oriented province,” he commented.

Campbell pointed out how Saskatchewan citizens will benefit from these numbers.

“The fact that we're seeing really positive growth across a number of sectors bodes well for people's future job prospects, investment prospects and so on,” he said.

When it came to total exports out of the prairies Saskatchewan was in the middle with $16 billion.

Manitoba was at $6 billion, and Alberta had almost $49 billion in exports due in part to their large energy products sector.
