Friday Night Lights gets help from provincial government

Jun 18, 2012 | 6:51 AM

Prince Albert’s Friday Night Light’s campaign is getting some help from the Saskatchewan Government.

Through the Community Vitality program the campaign was able to apply for a grant from the government.

The focus of the Community Vitality program is to help provide “small capital projects and community pride projects and events,” according to their website.

This means that projects involved with the construction of a new facility or improvements to a facility, along with youth leadership or Aboriginal inclusion, and projects that reduce financial burdens or other barriers to community participation are eligible for a grant.

On Friday the 15th at a media event, donations were made to the Friday Night Lights campaign.

One of those donations was through the Community Vitality Program.

Prince Albert Carlton MLA Darryl Hickie was on hand, representing the province, to donate $50,000 to the project on behalf of the government.

“It’s one of those kinds of initiatives that the government sees as a no-brainer. Across government we get all kinds of requests from communities, and this particular program, through Culture, Parks and Sport, is one where they can apply for a grant of up to $50,000, and we’ve given almost $6 million since 2010, so it’s a great initiative for communities across the province,” said Hickie.

“[The donation] shows the youth that’s involved that there are other avenues for fundraising, that the government is a part of this, we wanted to help out. It’s just a feel-good program and a feel-good cause.”

The next big push for the campaign is a radio marathon on Tuesday held by Rawlco Radio.
