Closing in on an early harvest

Sep 29, 2011 | 12:01 PM

With only a few days left in September, the 2011 harvest in Saskatchewan is nearing completion.

Ninety-one per cent of the provincial crop has been combined and seven per cent is swathed or ready to be straight cut, according to the weekly crop report from Saskatchewan Agriculture.

The province is well ahead of the five-year average, said Grant McLean, crop specialist, who attributes the speedy harvest to long spells of warm and dry weather.

“Many reporters are indicating the lion’s share (of the harvest) should be done by next week, certainly even some by the end of this week.”

Harvest is also well ahead of schedule on fields in northeast. McLean said 90 per cent has been combined in that region and some producers around Meath Park are starting to wind down.

“They’re indicating around 93 per cent.”

Not only are farmers expected to finished earlier this year, the quality of the crops coming off the fields are good, McLean said.

“Some of my colleagues have been reporting, particularly canola yields, are very, very high and certainly some good cereal yields.”

All areas of the province have at least 90 per cent of the crop combined with the exception of the northwest which is lagging behind at 84 per cent.
