Carlton and St. Mary to field six soccer teams combined at 2011 Carlton Classic

Sep 29, 2011 | 6:41 AM

Those who want to see some local high school soccer talent, there will be no better place to do so than the 2011 Carlton Classic, starting Friday at Prime Minister’s Park and the Kinsmen fields.

Six local clubs will be in taking the field as Carlton will field both its girls’ teams and its boy club, while St. Mary will do the same.

According to Carlton Crusaders girls A head coach Jennifer Ferguson, soccer has done very well in P.A. in recent years and there is a lot of interest and talent in the sport, especially at the high school level.

“Prince Albert is known as a soccer hotbed, for sure,” said Ferguson. “We have had two teams in Carlton for at least the last 10 years, which is as long as I have been here, and it’s the first year St. Mary has had one.

“We’re hoping to be in the finals against St. Mary, if we had to make a prediction, that’s what it would be,” added Ferguson. “The way it’s kind of gone in the last few years, us and St. Mary have met in the final in the past seven or eight years and it’s always a one or two game, so it’s good.”

But to get to the finals, the local teams will have to overcome some tough competition. Ferguson expects Weyburn to be especially tough on the girls’ side and Walter Murray from Saskatoon could be a tough team on the boys’ side.

Also making the trip for the tournament are Moose Jaw Peacock in the girls’ side and North Battleford and Se-Se-Wa-Hum from Big River.

The games start on Friday at 10 a.m., with the Carlton A taking on St. Mary B at Prime Minister’s Park Field 1, while on Field 2, St. Mary A will take on Carlton B. Also at 10 a.m. in the boys’ pool, the St. Mary boys will take on SeSe Wa Hum.

Games on Friday will go at 10 a.m., 12 p.m., 2 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. with playoff games starting on Saturday at 9 a.m. Semifinals will take place at 11 a.m. with the finals at 1 p.m.

All Saturday games will be at Prime Minister’s Park.
