Youth Soccer Association registration deadline is today

Sep 9, 2011 | 7:35 AM

Your last chance to sign up for the indoor season is ticking away as the local youth soccer club will no longer accept registrations after today.

According to Prince Albert Youth Soccer Association’s (PAYSA) technical director Bob Maltman, there are several reasons to do so this year, and one of the big ones being the facility they get to play in.

The Alfred Jenkins Centre will be the home of the PAYSA players this year after being constructed last season and this could really benefit the city’s select team, the Prince Albert Celtic Soccer Club.

Instead of travelling all over the province to get games, Maltman said he is working to get the Celtic clubs home games at the Alfred Jenkins, to drastically cut down travelling time and costs.

“I’m trying to with various clubs in Saskatchewan, to try and get their teams to come up to see the quality of the facility we have in the Alfred Jenkins Centre and to entertain our opponents at home rather than feeling they have to travel out of town to get some competition,” said Maltman.

After each player registers for PAYSA, they are eligible to try out for a Celtic team, available from U10 to U18 age groups in both boys and girls divisions.

Maltman said both the Celtics program, created in 1989, and PAYSA have a good history of talent and success.

“It’s got a very storied history, we’ve had a number of very high quality athletes that have come out of the Prince Albert community, and if you look at their history as a development of an athlete, they’ve come from initially from the house league program and eventually joined the Celtics,” said Maltman.

After the Sept. 9 deadline, PAYSA will start the house league balancing program that’s used to create equal and competitive teams. House league teams are available in both boys and girls leagues, and from U6 up to U18.

Tryouts well then be held starting on Oct. 7-8 for all those interesting in trying to crack a Celtics roster.

There will be no additional costs to try out for the Celtics, but there will be an additional team fee and tournament fees.

To register, visit the PAYSA office located at 2787 10th Ave. West or call the office at 922-2545.
